Big Stack Play in MTT's

Once Down to the last few tables of a multi tournament, often the big chip leaders make many fundamental mistakes with regard to chip management.
I myself have more than once made the error of being over-aggressive and attempting to be the table captain/bully, when with the assembly of the table, the best tactics would be to pick your spots and attempt to go in at least 60/40 against the low stacks.

Often players get blinkered when chip leader two tables out, thinking of victory before it has happened and counting your money. With the size of blinds in most of the tribbeca tourneys I play, it only takes a couple of bungled attempts at a steal making value calls when pot commited, can lead to the players you double up posing a problem in later stages and will make your likleyhood of getting another raise through highly unlikely.

I do a lot of homework on tourneys that i am not involved in often as sad as it sounds, i watch table 1 all the way to the final, in order to make notes on how players play two tables out with a small/big/and large stack.

This may seem a bit anorakish but i am always looking for anything that will give me an edge over my opponents, and i believe that this has given me an idea of how to play my stack against these players if they show up on my table with 18 to go.

Big stack strategy in the latter stages of an mtt is undoubtably more awkward than short stack play,
I believe that you need to give yourself a goal, ie do you want to place top 3, win it, or make final and see what happens. My usual strategy when in a chip lead is to play hands like i had the average stack, maybe loosen up on your raising hands a little, but NOT on your calling hands, put pressure on the blinds occasionaly, but dont take the piss, and try at all times to keep a tight aggressive image even when you are stealing a little.

I havent covered all aspects of Big stack play 2 tables out in an mtt, but hopefully it may help the 3 avid readers of the blog i have got.
I always love discussing any aspects of the game and analysing hands, so if anyone wants a chin wag or has got any good gags up their kipper sleeves

Better Rick.... Better

decided that i would disregard the affects of sleep deprivation and would play the $5000 guaranteed tourney at 3:00am this morning despite having about 1 hour sleep in the last fortnight...

Anyway it paid of in a way as I played a brilliant tourney, only got involved in one coin toss all night with QQ v AK two tables out made a nice move that ill post, instead of the $1617 i scooped for second as the tourney details have vanished some 5 hours after the tourney finished. I know i mayhave been infront in this hand anyway, but i thought it took a lot of balls..... especially on the bubble

we are 6 handed with 19 players left (18 got paid) blinds were 2000/4000 and i recieve KJos utg... i decide that i will minimum raise to 8,000 to either see a flop relatively cheaply or to recieve the blinds...

The BB decided to call the extra 4,000 ( im on 52,000 and he's on 60,000 chips on the flop)
the flop brings 5 5 5 , mmmm he is first to speak and bets 10k into the 18k pot now, it doeswt take a genius to see that he has no 5, and i believe if he has a pp he re-raises pre-flop, so i decide im gonna have this and re raise to 24k, he calls..... gulp this puts me on 38k approx, the turn comes a 7 he bets 8k which i flat call... still with k high

the river comes an 8.... he bets 12k into a now rather large looking 82k pot i have 30k back and he has 38k i reraise all in and after a dwell he passes..... i wonder what he had he reckons JQ, i reckon more like 22 or 33..

Back to that promised land

managed to sneak into 3rd in the $4000 rebuy at stupid o'clock for $717 3 tourneys tonight and 2 final tables, think i may be getting my form back after my AA held up against QQ for a big pot-- with 2 tables to go.
fancy winning one of the afternoon tourneys tommorow so watch out.... gotta get some kip now its, 7:18am and i need a fag desperately..

LMFAO

Bit of classy Perry Como

It's impossible, tell the sun to leave the sky, it's just impossible It's impossible, ask a baby not to cry, it's just impossible Can I hold you closer to me and not feel you goin' through me But the second that I never think of you, oh how impossible Can the ocean keep from rushin' to the shore, it's just impossible If I had you, could I ever want for more, it's just impossible And tomorrow, shouldya ask me for the world, somehow I'd get it I would sell my very soul and not regret it For to live without your love is just impossible

Talk about grinding

this week has not been the best, and looks like being the first losing week in a long time.... made 4 finals but no two 7th's and two 5th's in small comps is nothing to write home about, just made the money in the 12k scraped into 26th,

Its the stt's that have killed me this week, a mix of a few over-aggressive plays and a bit of bad bloody luck.

playing in a $3000 speed (crapshoot) tourney to try and get a win under my belt for this week.

might even stay in tommorow to try and enf the drought..... here goes let me be <}}}}><'y poker gods, one time one time

Monday, January 09, 2006

is that my old friend mr TILT

played 4 stt's this afternoon and 2 mtt's. The results are as follows;

$50 stt 9 seater 3rd (disconnected with 6 players left) i wanna meet the mug who finished 4th = $90
$50 stt 6 seater (speed) won it, got lucky once, but big deal = $195
$50 stt 9 seater 5th--- no cards called a lot of my stack away moved with AJ called by JJ no help = $0
$100 stt 9 seater 3rd--- had a chance to win but lost most of my stack when a guy slowplayed AA
$3500- guaranteed tourney $20+ $1.35 ( 2 buy ins, never got started, out with the washing in about 60th) =$0

$4000 guaranteed tourney $20+$1.35 ( scrapped stole, begged my way to final, when i ran my 99 on bb into AA on sb, shit happens = 5th place and $283

went to cinema this evening to watch a film called running scared, quite a good film, very entertaining....
got back in time for 12k guaranteed.

played a $50 stt, whilst a cocktail of my parents on my back and msn popping up every 2 seconds, contributed to me pissing away a decent stack in the stt with 5 left and not rebuying in the 12k after lossing with 1010 first hand v JQ....... dont tilt from poker anymore, still tilt from other shit though!!!!

anyway about £170 up for the day, which reads could do better... and it will do tommorow....

im off vc now, and im gonna watch the tournament of champions and maybe a porno.... poker is not a good idea at the mo.. goodnight

Nothing much over the weekend

not a very productive weekend, didnt get much poker played, spent most of my time getting sloosed in my local.... so its mondaymorning and back to business, gonna try and get at least 5 $50 9 seaters a day this week, i reckon till friday which is 25 stt's i hope to win 10 so we'll see what happens.

mmmm..... happy but no $$$$

was really happy with my play in the $3500 guaranteed tourney even though i places 12th (9 got paid) was up against it from the start and battled to last 12 with a series of all in raises with garbage, went out on two coinfips my AK v 33 and my 77 v A10, losing both... but was lucky to beat A9 with A2 so all in all, happy with how i played and can't ask for more--- a guy called loose larry should win this, he's hit every flop and you cant get him off a landmine---

laterz

there it is, still hurts to see that <}}}}}>< in 2nd

Gutted

played one of the best tourneys in my life, got down to 3 handed with blinds at 15k/30k one guy had only 80k utg flat calls i move all in for nearly 300k with AcKc short stack passes, chip leader calls with A6 soooted, and hits his 6 and his flush, im sure i woulda won it from there, imo it was a bad call as he knew that i wouldnt get cute with a 80k shortstack, gutted probably cost me $3k........... but thats............ goodnight,

ill post result in morning...well later on cus it says website is not responding

What a Joke

when they come after me..... They go right to schhooool

brilliant start to the new year, to be honest the luck was with me in 2 crucial pots heads up with A4 and A5 v 44 and 33 and also lucky to survive a few 60/40 ( in my favour) all ins, all guns for the 100k tonight which i stole my place for $6.30..... Lets ave it!!!!!!!!!

and heres a pic of me asleep, ( note the grim reaper coming through the door)
